The Academy of Albanological Studies has taken legal action against the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Education, filing a lawsuit to challenge the closure of the institution and requesting the annulment of the decision.

Describing the closure as an unprecedented act, the Academic Senate of the Academy emphasizes that the decision was made in violation of legal procedures and without prior consultation with the institution.

In an announcement, the Academy of Albanological Studies informs that on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, a request-lawsuit was submitted to the Administrative Court of First Instance in Tirana. The purpose of this legal action is to challenge and annul decision no. 338, dated May 31, 2023, issued by the Council of Ministers, which pertains to the closure of the Academy of Albanological Studies and the reorganization of its main institutes. The Academy also seeks the suspension of the decision’s implementation until the judicial process is concluded.

On June 12, 2023, the Academic Senate of the Academy of Albanological Studies made the decision to initiate legal proceedings in response to the unprecedented act of closing one of the most significant institutions in Albanian studies, higher education, and Albanian culture. The decision to take legal action was based on the Council of Ministers’ failure to follow the prescribed legal and sub-legal procedures, as well as the complete absence of prior consultation with the institution. The lawsuit seeks the repeal of these actions, which are deemed to be in violation of the law.

The lawsuit is signed by the president of the Senate and the rector of the Academy of Albanological Studies, Prof. Dr. Luan Perzhita.
