In a joint news conference with the Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, and the Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the Albanian government has suspended the golden passport procedure.

“We have made it clear that we have paused the procedure pending clarification of the European position. We did not create this; rather, we adopted it as a model from EU nations that had effectively implemented it. There is a controversy before the European Court. We no longer bring it up, awaiting the decision of the European Court. If the court rules against it, the matter is resolved; if the court rules in favor, each country will make its own decision “Rama added.

In contrast, the Prime Minister stressed the continuation of the fiscal amnesty effort.

“We have discussed fiscal amnesty, and our viewpoint is well-known. We value the European Commission’s promise to provide us with expertise, and we wish to continue working with experts. We do not simply give up since, in principle, this is undesirable. We have good reason to believe that this is the best course of action for Albania. Because to their experience, we now have an entirely different document from the one we started with “explained Rama.
