Local by-elections in six municipalities that are currently without a mayor, according to Lutfi Dervishi, who was invited to “Debate” by Alba Alishani on A2 CNN, are a quick test for the Democratic Party. Lulzim Basha, the incumbent leader of the biggest opposition force, the Democratic Party, has expelled from the party former leader and former PM, Sali Berisha, after severe internal confrontations. Berisha, on the other hand, has established a Re-establishment group aiming to remove Basha and is now ready to run in these elections by creating alliances with other parties of the opposition.

“This is a simple test, comparable to the quick anti-Covid tests,” Dervishi explained, “that demonstrates how much electoral power weighs on the Democratic Party.”

“The goal is to win the municipalities in these elections, but given the DP’s high temperatures, defeating the political opponent within the party might be considered a victory in and of itself.

“Every vote counts in municipal elections, thus it’s critical to unite not only the party, but also the opposition. In these circumstances, the Re-establishment is the most favorable, as it has no adversarial relations with the SMI or other Democratic Party allied parties,” said journalist Lutfi Dervishi.
