US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken praised Albania for its dedication to sheltering Afghan refugees in our country after the Taliban regained power, in an official letter to the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“On behalf of the State Department, I’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Republic of Albania for being the first country to provide a “safe haven” for endangered Afghans, as well as for the generosity and courage displayed by your people during NATO operations in Afghanistan,” writes US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
“Albanian troops helped build a safe and secure environment for our personnel, as well as the Afghan people4. Their presence has allowed the NATO Alliance to carry out its missions, as well as allowing young girls to attend school and making life safer for many Afghans. The United States values our close connection with Albania and remains dedicated to advancing our shared interests through this strategic cooperation.”
Albania has sent around 4,000 soldiers to Afghanistan as part of the “Resolute Support Mission” over the years.
