Albania will be part of the UN Security Council after being voted for taking one of the five temporary places in this council, with a two-year mandate. 175 countries out of 190 voted in favor.
The President of Albania, Ilir Meta, reacted after the decision. According to Meta, Albania will fulfill this duty with a high level of responsibility for the next two years.
“I greet the voting of Albania as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time in the 65 years of existence of this important organization for peace, security and global stability.
“The challenges are extraordinary and very difficult, but I am convinced that our country will fulfill this duty with high responsibility for the next two years”, Meta declared.
The Albanian Defense Minsiter, Olta Xhacka, considered this a historic decision. Xhacka declared that this decision marks a new step for the 65-year-relations between Albania and the UN.
The US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, greeted the decision and stated that the USA will cooperate even closer with Albania in the region and in the international arena.
