Bulgaria’s veto to North Macedonia could force the EU to hold the first Intergovernmental Conference only with Albania. So far, the two neighboring countries have proceeded together, but the EU Enlargement Commissioner, Oliver Varhelyi, declared in an interview for Euronews that this possibility was left open.
For Varhelyi, North Macedonia and Albania have met all the conditions to organize the first Intergovernmental Conference. “I hope we can hold the first intergovernmental conference in June. If we face more difficulties with North Macedonia, we will have to ask whether we can continue only with Albania”, Varhelyi declared.
According to sources, the European Commission is expected to recommend holding the first Intergovernmental Conference during the summit of the EU leaders, this June.
