The EU commissioner for enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, doesn’t exclude the possibility that Albania may be treated separately from North Macedonia regarding the EU accession negotiations if Skopje doesn’t resolve the disagreements with Bulgaria.
“Without an agreement with North Macedonia, that moment may come when we may need to review this option. I hope that this will be avoided”, Varhelyi declared during his visit to Skopje.
According to the commissioner, Albania has fulfilled the conditions and the negotiations are being withheld by the disagreement between North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
In November 2020, Bulgaria blocked the accession talks of North Macedonia with the EU, imposing conditions regarding their requests for the identity and language of North Macedonians.
